Nearly every year it has been televised, Audio-Technica's have been the main mics used on the annual Grammys and Country Music Awards Shows. One of the things musicians depend on is a quality vocal mic. Surprises on a high budget production like the Grammys Award Show and CMA broadcast is not going to be tolerated. Take a cue from the pros on this one and check out this Artist Elite Series AE5400 they use on stage. Why do you think they use them year after year? I used to just keep the house microphone provided by the venue but quickly learned that can come back to bite you.

Whereas the soundman rules, you can still arrive early and speak with him regarding using your own mic. I've done this and you'd be surprised at how accommodating they can be. Besides most sound techs want to try new equipment so if you have a really nice mic or preamp, they are likely going to be interested.

GETTING VOCAL
One venue I played, I checked in with the soundman and discussed the equipment I was bringing. He assured me that he would be able to integrate it into the house sound system. The day of the gig, I arrived early and helped set everything up. The result was a smooth, comfortable performance with no mic issues or sound surprises. In fact, I was one of the first performers to bring and use a condenser mic onstage. The house mic was a dynamic, you know that good 'ol Shure SM58! After I finished the set, I took my Audio Technica ATM710 Artist Series condenser microphone with me. We later stopped by to hear the band that followed but... couldn't! The house microphones were barely picking up the vocals and instruments. They were practically shouting into them.

I knew that feeling. I don't (want to) remember how many places I've played using the equipment that was there only to have to just about scream into the microphone to be heard, (barely). Something like that just throws off your whole performance because now you've got to position yourself closer to the mic which may be unnatural to hold.

INSTRUMENT MICROPHONES

The same thing for your instrument and amp mics. Years ago, bringing something as sweet but fragile as a ribbon mic to a performance was pretty much unheard of. Ribbon microphones are amazing but dropping one means several hundred dollars down the drain. Now with new technology, the AT 4081 Ribbon Mic is much more rugged for travel and work outside the recording studio. In fact if you are using this equipment in the studio, i.e. a drum and bass machine, vocal preamps, guitar pedals, BRING THEM ALONG too. The familiar will make you more comfortable and confident when facing the crowds.
The main thing to remember is that YOU are the artist. Not to get all "Diva" on you but I think you'll find bringing your own microphones and preamps will give you the most control over your sound and performance. They you can relax and play.

UPDATE: We tested this tuner in the studio on a Martin HD-28 acoustic which is a very loud and powerful guitar. Martins are known for their booming lows which causes some tuners not to read the low E at all. This wasn't a problem with this tuner and both the high and low E's were easily detected.

Once you adjust the clip to the width of the headstock, there is really no need to take it off the instrument. Just keep in mind that you'll be looking at the underside of the headstock to read it. Not a problem because the LED lit screen is very bright and clear. It also automatically turns off after a set time if no signal is detected which will save battery life. This tuner takes watch batteries but due to its size, you'll see why no other type would fit.

Some musicians prefer to see the actual note they are tuning to which is a plus with this tuner. Each note that registers is clear and bright with extra lines to tell you if you're going sharp or flat. Really I would recommend it being kept on the headstock as it is so small, it would be quite easy to leave behind!

Hercules Guitar Stand's Auto Grip levers with a Dread

While a guitar stand choice is often a personal one, I'd like to think that I'm doing all that I can to protect my investment. I've been at an outdoor jam and watched in horror as my friend's prized dread accidentally blew off the bench. I've also seen a beautiful Taylor 800 Series get kicked off the stand and chipped by it's owner during a performance.

As disturbing as these events are, they don't have to happen if you: 1.) Invest in a quality guitar stand 2.) Take it with you where ever you play 3.) Use it religiously

One of the best guitar stands that I've seen has been the Hercules line. In the photo above it is holding a huge Martin Dreadnought and here to the right it is holding a heavy Fender Stratocaster. I did not have to change or adjust the headstock yoke. So what ever guitar I am playing at the time fits immediately into this stand.

Some of the features I like are the automatically releasing headstock levers and padded legs. The whole stand folds up instantly in seconds, making very portable.

I use it in the studio and when it's time to play out, it goes with me. A carry bag is available (GSB001) so you can easily pack it on gigs or on tour. No matter what, when I take a break, my guitar is safe and protected from falling and breakage. I can really relax!

This is due to the fact that the whole stand itself tilts back on three legs which gives it a very stable base.

Guitar Care: It's the Humidity

Guitar: "It's not the heat, it's the humidity!"

Now that fall is here, (or just about), we have to start thinking about the care & feeding of our acoustics a bit more. The best place to keep control over temperature & humidity is still the guitar case. I prefer the molded thermoplastic cases that came with my Martin Guitars and keep a hygrometer / thermometer inside each one. Gigbags are great but they are porous and will not maintain optimal humidity and temperature conditions very well. You need to get serious about storing and monitoring your instruments during times of excessive wetness as well as drier days that come with the fall. PHOTO: Planet Waves Hygrometer

Now I've been guilty in the past of "over-feeding" my Martin acoustics as top guitar technician, Dave Doll can attest. I was using the older Humidi-Pak by Planet Waves without a monitoring system inside the case. As I could not tell what the levels were, the guitars became over humidified and difficult to play, (think REALLY high action). The Humidi-Pak claims to regulate the humidity, adding/subtracting moisture so you stay roughly between 45-55%. It's been very rainy the past few weeks and I have to say that the humidity in the case only went up to 59% so I'll call that a success. All the same, I think it's a mistake to leave any humidifying gadget inside your guitar or case without periodically checking to see how the guitar's levels are interacting with the environment.

Another way of dealing with low humidity levels is to simply humidify your ambient environment and store your guitars in a climate controlled room or area. Your recording studio should definitely be under climate control especially for the benefit of your most precious instrument, your voice. I like to keep at least one guitar out on the stand for easy access so it's great when the whole studio is properly keep at the right moisture level. PHOTO: Air O Swiss Travel Humidifier

The BEST Guitar polish...
I don't like to polish my guitars that often and I've been told to let the wood breathe for a full year on a new guitar. Part of keeping the wood moisturized is to use a good guitar polish. Everyone has their favorite mixtures and elixirs but Virtuoso Instrument Cleaner and Polish are some of the best I've ever used. The most impressive results will come if you clean and polish your guitar before they get embedded with grime and dirt. Still the Virtuoso cleaner does a very good job of even dealing with poor, neglected instruments. I like Martin's Polishing Cloths and try to wipe my guitars down after every use. Since they all have a light coat of Virtuoso Polish at this point, that;a quite easy and those forearm smudges are a thing of the past.

The Wrap
Keep in mind that when you buy a new quality acoustic guitar from a reputable dealer, it will be kept in a climate controlled area such as what you see here at Russo's Music Center. Once the guitar leaves that perfect environment, it begins to dry out. The sound of that perfectly conditioned guitar is most likely what led you to buy it, right? You can keep that first spark alive by properly humidifying your instrument at home or in the studio.

Studio equipment tips to make your next CD / Mp3 recording project a success!

If you are just starting to think about a home recording studio to make your musical ideas come to life, getting a stand alone portable digital recorder is a good place to start. You'll want a system that will grow with you so don't worry if things like mastering and recording drum and bass tracks are not top priorities right now. They will be more important later so it is best to invest in a recorder that has at least 8 tracks.
I chose the CD burning feature of the BR-1200CD 12 track digital recorder because it allows me complete control over my production from first idea to finished disc. I can also quickly provide producers or venues with a sample CD on demand in minutes. No minimum orders! Of course many pros will simply exchange MP3 files but often times the sound quality will only be as good as the receiving end's laptop or MP3 player.
A CD can travel easily in a car where is when most agents would have the time to listen to it.

Now if you are someone like myself who has had very little if any experience in digital recording, you'll find the BR-1200CD to be pretty intuitive and easy to use. The microphone and guitar jacks are logically placed in both the front and back of the unit. The only thing is with this model, you can only record two tracks at a time. It really isn't a major problem for me because I prefer to layer or over-dub my tracks anyway. That way if the last set of tracks you recorded doesn't sound right, you can scrap it without killing all of the tracks you've recorded prior.

The BR-1200CD has great built in effects for both vocals and guitar. It will even accommodate a phantom powered mic but you will need to make that adjustment within the system itself. I would seriously consider upgrading to a condenser mic for use with this recorder especially if you are looking for warm clear vocals to stand out in the mix. I've used the Audio Technica ATM710 and AT2021 condensers with this recorder and have been blown away by the presence and richness they offer over dynamics. I can't wait to find out how the new Audio Technica-4081 Ribbon Mic will perform with this unit but I'm eager to experiment. Read our recent Review of the AT-4081!

Just like any other technology, there are nuances and a learning curve in the art of recording. Starting off with quality, all in one solutions means your recording studio will be less "Rube Goldberg-ish" and streamlined to get your projects out the door like a professional. Some musicians are almost fanatical about changing strings while other prefer to leave them on forever as the enjoy that "dead string" sound. I suppose I'm somewhere in the middle. However I'm almost fanatical about washing my hands before I pick up my guitar and wiping them off after I'm done. I also rotate between four guitars and an Autoharp so my strings generally don't go dead from use but old age. If you scratch the surface of your guitar strings and notice a lot of gunk coming off, or notice black patches of discoloration, well, it's time for a change.

All the same, let's say you get a call to fill in at a gig tonight. With everything else that you have to do, you're not going to have time to change your guitar strings. So what's to do? Even if you had the time to change strings, new ones are going to constantly go out of tune that evening even with stretching them in. Also sometimes when you change strings, it can throw off your neck adjustment especially if you go from medium gauge to light.

Well, rather than go through all of that, you can use Planet Waves Renew String Cleaning System.

Spring is the time to get back on the road if you've been locked up in the studio during the winter months. Now is the time to assess your flight cases and touring bags for wear. While touring needs will vary from band to band, for more local venues, most of us find ourselves packing & transporting our own rig. Your most important gear (read expensive) is often going to be your guitar and mics so we've included ideas for these pieces and more!

The iPod drowns out the guitar so you'll really need to to crank up the volume on your axe to play along. The bag is well padded with roomy pouches and shoulder straps and appears to accommodate most electric, solid body guitars.

Now maybe you've gotten away with a padded gig bag for local jams BUT when you are playing a professional gig, you may not always be handling your own guitar. If you are flying in, you'll need to invest in a serious flight case. So what do you do? Well you could spend about a grand for a high tech Carlton Carbon Fiber Case or get real and invest in a Martin 600 Series Thermoplastic Case for well under $200. The latter will protect your prized dread with a padded, plush lining plus keep it from suffering drastic temperature changes during traveling. These days we only use Hercules Microphone and Guitar Stands in the studio so it would make sense to take this gear with us on the road. Hercules makes heavy black canvas carry bags for nearly all of their folding stands. In the photo I have a tubular speaker stand which I use with my Roland SA-300 and Fender Passport 500 PA systems.
This bag has a padded carry strap, inner Velcro braces and expands to accommodate extra wide gear. Really you could almost fit a snowboard in this thing! The smaller tote is a Hercules Guitar Stand Bag. Basically a pack and go feature for their EZ Grip Guitar Stands.

Bob Dylan Revisits Highway 61 VIDEOS!

We're celebrating Bob's 70th Birthday this May as Highway 61 Revisited performs Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" with breakout solos by Joel Gilbert, (lead vocals, rhythm guitar 1945 Gibson J-50), Scarlet Rivera, (violin) and John "JJ" Jackson, (lead guitar, arch-top Gretsch). Rivera was part of Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue Tour and is heard on many of his recordings. Jackson likewise was an original band member of Dylan's and was part of his Never Ending Tour. Gilbert is a cinematographer (Bob Dylan: World Tours 1966-1974, NR 2004) and expert on Bob Dylan's music and instruments. Gig Your Rig: Fender Passport Pro 500 Review

A lot of singer - songwriters have depended on the Fender Passport for small to medium sized gigs. They really were a step up, allowing you to travel with a compact PA System that easily fits in the backseat of your car. At about 53 lbs, the Fender Passport Deluxe PD-500 is considered light to have your 8 channel mixer, speakers, mics and cables all included in the weight. They work fairly well for vocals and drum / bass machines. I still prefer a dedicated tube amp for the guitar but in a pinch you can plug an acoustic right in. Phantom power allows you to use more sensitive condenser mics but the Deluxe PD-500 came with two well made Fender dynamic mics. Sounds pretty cool, right?

Fender Passport® 500 PRO Replaces the Deluxe PD-500
So when Fender came out with their series "upgrade", the Passport Pro, I was very interested in the next generation's innovations. One thing is the weight. The Passport Pro 500 is nearly 9 lbs lighter than the Deluxe PD-500 but there's a partial reason for that. Fender touts the Passport Pro 500 as the "top of the line" in this series. We beg to differ. One issue is that you get LESS by way of accessories and quite a bit so. The original PD-500 Deluxe came with two very solid Fender dynamic mics, cables, clips and cases. These essentials are NOT included with the new Passport Pro 500. So you are going to have to go out and buy mics and cables before you can gig this rig. That would also bring up the weight!

Another issue we found with the new Passport is that it only offers reverb in the FX department. The previous Passport gave you a full array of rather professional plates including Hall, Room, Delay, Reverb and more. The older Passport also came with high quality Celestion Speakers and heavy duty Speakon Cables. Fender says the speakers are still made by Celestion. No go on the Speakon Cables however. The ones you get now are very thin in comparison and do not lock as the Speakons.

The "redone" Passport Pro 500 has a port that lets you record your performance with CD quality (.wav) straight to a USB flash drive, CD-quality .wav and mp3 file playback. Passport's are adequate enough for live performances but I don't know too many artists wanting to record with it. Most musicians just want to get in, set up and play with something that is reliable and rugged. I've found Passports in general to be just that. The new Passport has 10" Woofer, 1.2" Horn Loaded Tweeter. The older Passport Deluxe PD-500 has Two 8" woofers and one titanium compression driver and horn per cabinet PLUS Neo-Precision neodymium speakers designed by Celestion. Feedback Killer was also installed on the older higher end Passport series.

The Wrap:
As a musician, you have to determine what is really important to you and your audience. While the new Fender Pro 500 is about $400 cheaper than the previous model, you will still need to purchase mics, cables, etc. before you can take it on the road. While most musicians use a Passport for vocals, the loss of all but reverb for effects is not a good trade off. Without multi effects you could end up sounding like you are singing through a PA system. I'm sorry to see the older Passport Deluxe PD-500 go but was glad to have it repaired rather than replaced with the newer model. All in all, not a good call on this one, Fender.

Once again "Old School Must Rule" but the old Fender Passport goes the way of the dinosaur.

C.F. Martin's New Cleartone Strings

One of the things I have appreciated about being a Martin Guitar Owner is the excellent factory set-up all my guitars have received. In general, most acoustics tend to have a higher action (distance between the strings and fretboard) than electrics. This has not been a serious problem with my Martin D-16GT or SWDGT even after having them restrung at their Free String Clinics.

Not only did I learn a lot about guitar mechanics, but these clinics gave me a chance to try out different Martin Acoustic Strings. I recently switched from Medium Phosphor Bronze to Lights on my D-16 and was thrilled with the change. The guitar plays like butter now!

It is worth it to experiment a bit because new strings are like giving your guitar a "voice lift". Dead strings are just that, DOA. New to Martin's line of acoustic strings are the Lifespans, treated with Ceartone for longer play. I am looking forward to trying these out on my HD-28. These are being installed on all new production Martins this year. Oftentimes, guitar strings will sit on a wall at the music store and go dead before they can even be played. Martin hopes to avoid this problem with the use of Cleartone strings which should be a boon to both dealers and their customers.

This time of year, everyone wants to be a little Irish and if you are playing local pubs and coffee houses, you might want to have a few Gaelic ballads on your set list. Your audience will appreciate your inclusion of them even if they aren't Irish just based on their beauty alone.

Now while "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" is a lovely sing-along, there is so much more to Celtic music than that. You would do well to look into the history of many of these songs which oftentimes were written in homage to the wealthy landowners from whom Irish peasants rented.

Therefore many of the songs in this genre are not necessarily love songs as one might think. More than that they were written out of respect and awe of people occupying a certain station in society.
Think of how an artist renders his patron in a painting. Very flattering! In other words the one who pays the piper calls the tune. Traditional Irish Folk Songs like Garryowen are used as a Bagpipe March and have patriotic lyrics.

Wake Songs are also another type of Irish music that might be misunderstood. A parting glass and an Irish Wake was part of the experience of many who would leave Ireland never to return to friends or family. Needless to say, these are very moving compositions. Hal Leonard's Big Book of Irish Songs for Piano Vocal & Guitar offers lyrics and guitar chord diagrams in standard notation. Not all are Folksongs but quite a few are from Tin Pan Alley such as those written by George M. Cohan (Mary's A Grand Old Name & Harrigan) The songs are alphabetically ordered for easy access and the book itself folds quite flat for your music stand or piano. This is NOT a Fake Book so be prepared for multiple chord changes on the guitar. Well worth the effort if you want to get the full flavor of each song.

Things to Look Out For

The bottom guitar braces do not snap securely in place. If you're wearing wide boot cut jeans, they might get caught on one of them as you're jumping off. Not a cool way to exit your set! I've found this to also be a problem when transporting the stool so the simple solution is to hold it upside down by the bottom cross braces. Minor issues when you still have the best seat in the house for both you AND your guitar at your next gig.

If you are an adult and would like to finally have the chance to take guitar lessons, we have GREAT NEWS! Monmouth County Library, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan, NJ is offering FREE beginner classes for adults starting in February 2011! These classes have been offered at other branches in 2010 but they are now coming to the Library Headquarters!

Students must be available to attend all 4 sessions which will be held on Wednesdays - February 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd 2011. You also have your choice of two time slots:

The first class is 6 pm to 7 pm and the second is 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Your instructor is Justin Miller. This four-part workshop will teach you a lot of the basics: guitar tuning, restringing, tuning keys and note structure. Students are requested to bring in a song that they would like to learn to play. This workshop is for the TRUE beginner with no formal guitar instruction. Bring an acoustic or electric guitar as either can be accommodated in the practice room.
Registration is limited and ends on Friday, January 28th, 2011. Please call the Reference Desk to register: 732-431-7222. The NEW SANYO PEDAL JUICE can power a whole pedalboard worth of effects without an AC connection. Here it is firing up a Planet Waves Tru Strobe Pedal Tuner with ease but it can handle a whole chain of boxes. A rechargeable, clean 9 Volt power source for your effects pedals. Freedom!

One of problems most musicians have when they tour is too many cords and cables to and from the effects board. While many larger, professional venues have AC outlets on stage, others such as coffee houses, civic centers or churches often have you fending for yourself. If you are doing an outdoor concert, you'll find many of them rely on gasoline powered generators.

Now while most effect pedals can accommodate batteries, you're always worried if the Duracells are going to be enough to get you through your set. Also, if you use something like a drum & bass machine, (I use a BOSS DR-3 on the road and the DR-880 in the studio), well those are going to suck even MORE juice than your stompboxes. Believe me there's nothing worse than having an important piece of gear like that die on you during a performance. Even with something as substantial as my Voodoo Lab Pedal Power II, I'm still reliant on a nearby AC outlet to pull it off.

I've probably spent a small fortune on batteries for my effects only to have them fail at some critical point. There are also several noteworthy low wattage "lunch box" amps that run on batteries such as the Roland Mobile Cube Battery - Powered Stereo Guitar Combo Amp. At only 5 watts, it needs a 9 volt power source so the Sanyo Pedal Juice can power that too. Also Ernie Ball has just come out with a Marshall Gig Bag Amp. This portable Gig Bag amp also uses 9 volts via batteries or an adapter. Imagine being able to take your rig anywhere and plug into a mini amp in the park, jam session or guitar class all with no worries about an AC outlet?

The Sanyo Pedal Juice can power two separate effects as shown here with the TC Helicon Voicetone Create XT and the BOSS DR-3 drum & bass machine. My T.C. Helicon Create XT and Harmony G pedals don't have an on & off switch. The KBC-9V3U includes an ON/OFF power switch which allows me to easily to turn the power of all connected music effects devices ON or OFF with the press of a single button. This is convenient since many effects devices do not include their own ON/OFF switch and must be manually unplugged from AC power.

The power levels are even and consistent with the Sanyo Pedal Juice with no drops or fluctuations. This unit will drive your pedalboard for up to 50 hours depending on the devices you have plugged in. The Sanyo Pedal Juice also holds a charge extremely well. We charged it up to full power and after a week, plugged it in. It was still at 100% capacity. The color coded lights tell you when the power is at its peak or getting low, something batteries don't do. The MSRP for the Pedal Juice is $199.99 and the Street Price is $149.99. We were looking for an all around, workhorse of a ribbon microphone for the studio. The problem is, ribbon mics are notoriously fragile, however the AT 4081 is showing itself to be rugged AND one of the best recording mics we've tested. One reason is the super fine mesh which protects the dual ribbon within. This innovation makes for increased sensitivity and response of the mic.

The bidirectional build of this microphone makes it easy to position in small spaces. You can use it to mic an acoustic guitar using a boom mic stand or as a vocal mic by adding a pop filter. Either way, this mic allows vocal warmth & open, airy sounds of your instrument to shine on recordings.

TC Helicon Voice Tone Create-XT

The AT-4081 is a phantom powered ribbon mic meaning you will need to power it from either a 48V connection from your amp or from a pedal preamp like the Create-XT. The Create-XT is an upgrade from the previous Create pedal. It will support any phantom powered mic but where it shines is in the recording studio quality vocal FX's and effects.

It has 100 to choose from but for all practical purposes, you only have ready access to the first 10, (twenty if you include the A-B selections). We also use the Harmony G in concert as it offers similar vocal effects PLUS vocal harmonies created by your guitar chords. Still, if you want extra polish or edgy effects on your vocals, the Create XT is IT!

Herc ules Tilt Base Mic Stands have been especially useful in tight corners as the footprint is a bit smaller than the tripod versions. Fatter Sound for Acoustic Guitars

As you are able to move up and accustom yourself to the thicker varieties, you'll find your fingers slowly being able to adapt to different thicknesses quite easily. Labor Day Weekend surely ROCKED! Eclectic Sound TV caught TobyMac back on stage Sunday night for Revelation Generation (RevGen) 2010! Just off of his tour with Skillet who played the same venue Saturday night. Best concert to date!

TobyMac & the E.R.A.C.E All Star Jam closed another fantastic RevGen with Phil Keaggy, Natalie Grant, Bernard Harris, Mark Broussard, Lou Gramm, (front man for Foreigner), Mary Mary and more fantastic artists. 60 + bands plus other events such as a skateboarding / freestyle demonstrations, volleyball, hot food and face painting made this a true end-of-summer festival.

Grammy Award winner TobyMac has sold 2 million albums in his solo career with a fusion of R & B, Rock and Hip Hop. His shows are always fresh with non-stop B-boying, acrobatics and jumps. Showcasing top notch vocals, dance and rapping, his set is NOT to be missed.

Main Tent Talent

One of the highlights of this event is the musical talent. This year Martin shows their support of young pop artists who are shining with the new Performing Artist Series guitars! These include Suite Caroline and Tyler Grady, American Idol semi-finalist and Travis Hobbie both of Wailing Waters. The Wrap

I've attended four Martin Owners Club Day events and I have to say each year they get better and better! However one high point of the whole event for me is this:

Each year at the end of his Member Address, Chris Martin graciously signs guitars and other memorabilia for the members. He kindly signed my Martin D-16GT, the first Martin Guitar I ever purchased! He signs it on the wood so in case the paper label falls off, you still have his signature. Pretty cool, eh? This is Martin's 177th year in continuous operation. I wish them many hundreds more! Custom Pedal Boards vs BOSS GT-10

Which is best? Stomp box effects or a multi-effector like the BOSS GT-10? If you are gigging a lot this summer, here's how to make the call. Left Keeley's Fuzz Head and Digitech's - Scott Ian Signature multi effect pedal.

One of the main travel issues bands have to contend with is portability and weight. My acoustic rig consists of: A Fender Passport PD-500, (mixer is built in), an Audio-Technica Wireless Guitar System & AE5400 condenser vocal mic, Fender Wireless Headworn Mic, BOSS Dr. 3 Drum & Bass Machine, T.C. Helicon mic preamps, Martin D-16 and HD-28 acoustic guitars with pick ups, Autoharp with pickup.

My electric rig hauls a: Tech21 NYC Trademark 60 guitar amp, Fender Stratocaster, Keeley Fuzz Head, Keeley Compressor, BOSS Digital Delay, Ibanez WD-7 Wah Pedal OR the BOSS GT-10 with the same mics and sound support systems as listed above. So you can see that I can get most of all the same effects and more in the signal chain that I wish with the BOSS GT-10.

Still there is a place for home grown pedal boards. Most bands either have them custom made or set them up themselves such as the one here below by Jon Falk, a guitarist for the band 40Winx.

Home Grown Pedal Boards

You can see here that Jon has his pedals in the order he prefers and spaced for easy access during the set. The Volume pedal is over on the left but many guitarists have their Wah / Volume pedals on the opposite side of the board on the right. Still this is the beauty of making your own. One size does not fit all and this guitarist's preferences come first. The result? Mr. Falk was hitting his switches with ease and confidence throughout the concert. This band does many classic rock covers from the Beatles to Fleetwood Mac to Neil Diamond to the Black Crowes. When you have to cover that many styles, these pedals are almost a necessity to capturing the original "tone" of the guitar leads. With out them, a cover band could not pull off the "flavor" of the song they are trying to recreate.

BOSS GT-10 Multi-Effector

The BOSS GT-10 offers some of the same options as a custom or hand made pedal board. For example, you can order the pedals in a specific sequence or allow BOSS to do it for you by using one of the factory presets. Notice too that the volume/expression pedal is over on the right. If that is not to your liking, well you're sort of stuck with it!

Another thing that I noted with the BOSS GT-10 is that while many of the 400 + presets are good, they will often vary in volume. You'll be playing Texas Crunch and then switch to another preset and have a huge drop off in volume. So switching effortlessly between presets as shown in the BOSS videos is really just hype. Some of the presets are so much hotter than the others that they can cause major feedback should you want to plug in an acoustic. This even happens when you are trying the ultra clean channels.

The Wrap

You really have to judge for yourself which option is best. I like the fact that the GT-10 is a all-in-one multi-effector with more cabinets, amps, modeling and effects than I'll ever use. Still, it has its limitations. If you can keep it clean and sweet, I would recommend building your own pedal board for the road and powering it with a Voodoo Lab Pedal Power II. This will mean, no surprises and you will most likely be more comfortable finding and hitting the switches you yourself have put in place. Martin HD-28 Review

Up until now, I have been performing with my Martin D-16GT which has a solid spruce top and mahogany back and sides. Like my HD-28, I had a Fishman Ellipse Matrix Blend under the saddle pickup installed at the Martin Factory. This pickup system does not require cutting into the guitar, preserving its beauty and function as an acoustic. The Matrix Blend allows you to combine and adjust the under the saddle pickup with the mic pic up to suit your playing needs. With my D-16, I switched to light Martin Acoustic strings because with my guitar amp, I found that the bassiness of the medium strings caused too much feedback.

The Martin HD-28 has a solid Sitka spruce top and rosewood back and sides. It is a full gloss guitar with beautiful herringbone binding and purfling down the back. However, where it shines is in the sound. This is a powerhouse instrument. Acoustically, it can easily fill a room without an amp. With an amp, (I use a vintage USA made Crate GX-20M on the road and a Tech21 Trademark 60 in the studio), it truly stands out with all its multi-tones. I simply choose the cleanest possible channel and adjust from there. The HD-28 is such a powerful and
loud guitar due in part to the scalloped X-bracing invented by C.F. Martin. This lighter, sculpted bracing allows the soundboard to vibrate much more freely, making the HD-28 sound quite "opened up" over its D-28 brother.

I found that on stage, I needed to back off of the strumming and picking a bit. The amp just reads that as too much gain but since I also play this guitar acoustically, changing to lighter strings is not an option. I also turned off the chorus. This guitar has plenty of "chime" without adding that effect. All in all I would recommend backing off the volume or gain on your guitar and amp for the cleanest tones. Otherwise you may end up with unwanted distortion and feedback.

I use a Medium Martin Tortoise Pick and a Planet Waves Dual Action Capo & Custom Pro Series Cables with the HD-28. I find that the PW Capo does not pull the guitar out of tune and their cables are superior for quietness. I packed the HD-28 in my Martin Gig Bag (SEE this REVIEW) which was much lighter than the hardshell case and easier to transport to the stage area. Actually, everything got carried in one trip. I was very impressed playing my Martin HD-28 for the first time in concert and am looking forward to using it again at my next gig with these adjustments. A true cannon!

Now that the weather is warmer, you'll be taking more road trips with your favorite acoustic guitar. The Dreadnought shape and design was actually invented by C.F. Martin & Co. Guitars and it is still a staple of many folk, country and western artists. The obvious reason why "dreads" are so popular is that they are loud enough not to require amplification. This makes them the best "unplugged" travel companions for picnics, beach parties and barbecues.

Depending on your travel arrangements, you might choose to pack your guitar in a lighter, easier to carry gig bag as shown above. The plus in using such a bag is the large outer zippered pocket that allows taking along sheet music and other larger items too big for a hardshell's storage compartment. These bags are good for traveling in a car or where you will be in control of your instrument.

Not all gig bags are alike though. I would recommend a Levy's heavy denim or leather gig bag for any solid body electric such as a Fender Strat or Gibson Les Paul. I have found Levy's to be extremely well made and richly padded.

Likewise the C.F. Martin 52BGB Logo Gig Bag is very well made. This gig bag is constructed of a tough nylon ballistics cloth exterior which resembles black denim with thick foam padding inside to protect your Dreadnought. I especially like the heavy double zipper pulls but wish they had put them on the outer pouch as well. All the same, this is a superior gig bag in style and features, worthy of your C.F. Martin or other beloved acoustic. The classic C.F. Martin logo is embroidered across the outside pocket in gold thread and the bag is reinforced at all the major stress points for extra strength. While it may not be a replacement for the safety of a hardshell case, it offers quite a bit more protection than the average gig bag being sold for acoustics.

Gig bags also give you more freedom to carry other items such as a stool or even an extra instrument. This is due to the backpack type straps. Slip the straps on your shoulders and your hands remain free or turn it on its side and tote it by the leather reinforced carrying handles. The bag is finished off with slip resistant resin feet. Flightcase: Traveling with Your Guitar

Traveling by train down the east coast with our band instruments - Little Martin LX1E guitar & Oscar Schmidt Centurion Autoharp

This is the time of year musicians hit the road to perform at festivals, concerts and jams. It is also the time you should make traveling arrangements for the safe transport of your band instruments.

Be sure to check the airport or rail station ahead of time for their specific rules regarding carry on luggage. Based on security issues, some airlines may have varying degrees of requirements for on board bag sizes. I have found that a smaller guitar such as the 3/4 size Little Martin can easily fit in the seat with you or be safely stowed in the overhead flight compartment or rack, (see photo above). This means you will not have to check your guitar and waste time, perhaps even missing your connection, trying to retrieve it. I have found that if it is at all possible, especially when flying, to keep your musical gear in your possession at all times. You are the best person to see that it is handled safely and carefully.

Most airlines require that onboard luggage fit in a certain size container which generally means accommodating a bag measuring about 15" x 25" inches. The Little Martin guitar would qualify as a carry on item. In the above photo I am transporting this guitar by train in it's C.F. Martin logo padded gig bag but you can purchase a hardshell case for extra protection. This might factor in as a preferred choice of an instrument for the road. The onboard Fishman Mini-Q pickup will compensate for the small instrument size once you arrive at your venue. Just have the sound tech voice the amp/PA to your specific instrument during the sound check and you're good!

Audio-Technica's Wireless Guitar System ATW-701/G MSRP $399.95

When you are traveling, you'll find ways to stow extra items in your gig bag which generally will offer more storage space than a hardshell case. One item you do not want to leave behind or pack carelessly is your wireless guitar system. This is my whole wireless guitar system packed and ready to go in a specially padded Audio-Technica case. The transmitter, receiver and cables all fit neatly and securely inside. This can also be taken along as onboard luggage or fit into a messenger bag. The way that the case opens makes it easy for airport security inspections so you should be in and out of line in no time.

Little Martin LX1E - MSRP $499.95

I've found the Little Martin LX1E with its solid spruce top and onboard EQ & pickup to be the perfect traveling guitar. For its 3/4 size, it offers quite a bit of volume acoustically however, you don't have to settle with that alone. Hook it up with a solid wireless guitar system such as the ATW-701/G, to a warm guitar amp and you won't notice the size.

One of the many benefits of taking along a Little Martin is that the laminated back and sizes do not react as readily to heat, cold and humidity changes. You can't get away with that using a solid wood guitar. You'll find the Little Martins to be quite road worthy indeed. In fact, I prefer traveling with this little powerhouse while reserving my Martin D-16GT and Martin HD-28 for local concerts.

Gibson Les Paul Axcess & Fender Deluxe VM

This past weekend, I had the sublime joy of playing this sweet Les Paul in black off the floor at Russo Music Center. So what sets this Les Paul apart from all of the other models bearing his name? One of the things that makes this electric different from others is the lack of a heel cap in the back. The guitar lays closer to your body because it is flatter in the back. It also allows you to get at the upper frets more easily. According to Gibson:

"While the Axcess sports what looks from the front to be a traditional Les Paul neck joint, the neck heel and portions of the back and neck joint at the upper cutaway have been contoured to provide a “heelless” feel and an unimpeded reach right up to the 22nd fret."

Other specifications and appointments befitting this new model’s pedigree include:
- One-piece mahogany neck with fast, rounded profile
- 24 3/4" scale length with 1 11/16" nut width
- 22-fret rosewood fingerboard
- Kluson tuners
- Single-ply cream binding on body top
- Pearloid trapezoid fingerboard inlays
- Carved maple top with nitrocellulose lacquer finish in Iced Tea Burst or Gun Metal Gray

This Gibson guitar model has a very fluid body shape that reminded me more of my Fender Stratocaster than a Gibson. None of the bulk was there. Fluid sculpted lines that hug your body especially around the ribcage. VERY comfortable playing! The added Floyd Rose tailpiece makes this guitar truly "custom" as the vibrato is factory installed by Gibson as part of the manufacturing process. So how did it sound? Really incredible! It sounded especially good through this Fender Deluxe Vintage Modified amp. The delay on the Fender Deluxe 40 watt amp is unreal.
At 40 watts, it was plenty loud and delivered all of that true Gibson tone with ease. Street price on this amp is $799.99. Relatively lightweight for a 40 watt amp with a 1 x 12 inch speaker, it is easy to carry to gigs and won't embarrass once you get there. PHOTO: Fender Deluxe Vintage Modified Amp in Blonde. Here is what makes this Fender amp unique:

The effects are often the downfall of most combo amps. They are either too obvious or difficult to control. The adjacent dials on the Deluxe VM allow you to tone them down to your liking.

This is a good match really. The Gibson Axcess truly shines with a tube amp with a bit of bassy warmth like the Fender Deluxe VM. Really it is very similar to my vintage USA made Crate amp only well, WAY better. A combo amp like this gives you a few stomp box effects built in for the road which means you can leave a few more pedals at home. Definitely worth taking for a test drive!

New Fender Passport 500 Pro Review

Fender's NEW Passport 500 Pro builds on the old PD-500 Deluxe model but how does it stack up?

I have the original Fender Passport PD-500 Portable PA System which I reviewed along with my Roland SA-300 Stage Amp here:

If you read the article review, one of the issues I noted was the sheer size and weight of the unit. It appears Fender listened and the new Passport Pro is a full 9 pounds lighter than the previous model, (44 lbs vs. 53 lbs). They were also listening to the concerns of bulkiness of the PD-500. The Passport 500 Pro model now offers smaller dimensions but still snaps together in suitcase fashion for transport.

So What's New?
Released earlier this year, some upgraded features of the Fender Passport 500 Pro include a port to record directly via (.wav, Mp3) to a USB flash drive. This can save space over storing large music files on your computer and is an easy way to record your live performances. The previous model Passport has high quality Celestion Speakers but the new Passport Pro 500 only says it has speaker cabinets each with 10" woofers and a 1.2 horn loaded tweeter. There is no mention of the type of speakers they are using in the new model although a Fender engineer claims they were "designed" by Celestion. Celestion speakers are some of the best I've heard in a live setting. The original Passport PD-500 has 8" Neo-Precision Celestion speakers and one titanium compression driver with horn per cabinet. This one technical aspect makes a HUGE difference in the system's quality and tone. One of the complaints I read from a musician who purchased the new Passport 500 Pro was that the sound from the speakers was" thin and lifeless and the amp very easily clips at moderate volume."

The first 6 Mono channels on the new Passport 500 Pro offer 48 V phantom power and the last two are stereo channels with connections for RCA cables such as would be used with our Gemini 3600 DJ Dual CD Workstation or a CD player. This is standard with the original Passport PD-500 as well which additionally offers Feedback Killer on all line level channels and phantom power switchability on the first 6 channels. There is also an onboard mixer with Digital FX controls for each channel on the old Passport PD-500. The new model only has reverb, not a full on Digital FX panel as before. The speaker cables with the original Passport PD-500 included the Neutrik locking Speakon connectors, (pictured above), which are some of the best available. The new Passport 500 Pro does not have the Speakons but cheaper speaker cables included.

Wireless Applications?
One of the features I did see carried over to the new Passport is the Wireless Docking System which is installed in the storage compartment of the unit. The Fender Executive Wireless Kit which is purchased separately, includes headworn and lavaliere mics PLUS and wireless guitar connector. This is unique because you did not need to bring along a separate, external wireless system. The Fender Passport Wireless runs off of the amp's power. The wireless application expands the versatility of the Passport, allowing you to travel light. PHOTO: Older Fender Passport P-150 hard at work in a Cafe setting. Included Accessories?
The original Fender Passport PD-500 Deluxe came with two decent quality Fender P 51 dynamic mics with cables. Each mic came with a zippered carrying case. They all fit neatly in the storage compartment of the unit. The older system was complete and road ready right out of the box. While I prefer Audio-Technica's condenser mics, the Fenders were not bad as dynamics go. The new Fender Passport 500 Pro does not come with any microphones or mic cables.

The Wrap:
While this was a basic first glance over-view, there are some things to note about the Fender Passport Series in general. They are not in the same class as Fender's classic guitar amps. The Passport is first and foremost a PA System but the Celestion Speakers with titanium compression drivers on the previous model gave the system a definite edge. Even with their upgrade being 9 lbs lighter, the weight and shape of the Passport is not practical towards carrying in as you would a "suitcase". I have used a Rock 'N Roller Micro Cart to transport it to gigs. In fact American Musical Supply's catalog has the Rock 'N Roller cart advertised on the same page as the new Passport 500 Pro! You will also need a custom canvas dust cover, (available from Fender), as the molded plastic on the speaker cabinets is easily scratched. As for reliability, I have seen Fender Passports of all sizes and ages used in a variety of settings from stage plays to cafe concerts. The Passports have a 5 year transferable warranty, which is quite good even by today's standards so be sure to complete registration online or by snail mail. My Fender Passport PD-500 quit on me during a gig due a sub-par diode. It sat in an Authorized Fender Electronics Service Center for 10 months waiting for the rare replacement part to arrive. Passports are made in China so perhaps that and the fact the PD-500 has been discontinued contributed to the wait. Fender is offering the Passport 500 Pro at about $400.00 less than the original PD-500 it is replacing. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Don't be fooled. The new Passport 500 Pro is not the "flagship" of the Passport line or an upgrade in the series. At the MSRP of $1,499.99, $999.99, Street the new Fender Passport Pro 500 appears to offer less in quality components but more technical apps than it's predecessor, the PD-500. Either way, I would pass on the new Passports.

The ATW-701/G is the system for a wireless guitar hookup. Really we have been amazed at how easy it is to incorporate a wireless system into our existing rig. If you look to the left in our banner ad section, you'll see that Audio-Technica makes a carrying case for their wireless systems, (3000 Series is shown), so they are made to travel very well.

Pedals With a Wireless Guitar System
If you are worried that using a wireless system means that you'll have to say goodbye to your pedals and stomp boxes, think again! If you want to use your same rig of pedals and effects, here is how you do it:

1. Run the out cable from the receiver to the first pedal

2. Connect all the pedals in their usual order, (45 degree mini cables work great)

3. Run a cable from the last pedal to the amp

In fact, you can set up the receiver right in with the effects pedals in the case although the manufacturer suggests 3 feet off the floor. Belmar St. Patricks Day Parade

SUNDAY, March 7, 2010 Main Street in Belmar...be there! Touted as one the largest St. Patrick's Day Parades and celebrations in New Jersey. Everyone will be there! Eclectic Sound will be on the ground, sampling Irish reels and fiddle tunes as well as all the excitement from the parade itself. Look for our tweets on Twitter, indicating locations of the best Irish pub music and jamming throughout the day. Busking was never this good!

The parade will be covered by Cablevision and re-broadcast on Channel 78. The Asbury Park Press will also have videotape footage from the parade at their website. Come out and meet us at the reviewing stand stage for some seriously rocking good times but with an Irish accent. Just take the train to Belmar and you are literally steps from the reviewing stand for the parade on Main Street. In fact the partying on the train is almost as fun as the parade itself! We've checked out and tested the best straps for both acoustic and electric guitars with some very cool ideas for people with shoulder and or neck problems. In order to improve form and playing posture, most guitar instructors tell their students to practice playing standing up. You need a strap to do that! This also prepares you for the time that you will perform on stage. These selected straps all make great gifts for the guitarist in your life and will be cherished for years to come.

Sully's New Leather Guitar Strap

The Sully Strap has been voted the hands-down favorite of our guitar playing readers! Handcrafted one at a time in the U.S.A. and made to last as long as your instrument, (or longer)! 1" wide, #1 harness leather strap Shoulder piece 2" wide by 11.5" long harness leather. Also available with 7/8" wide strap and 1 3/4" wide x 9" long shoulder piece for smaller size guitars.

Infinitely adjustable several inches on both ends to the exact length required by the user. Martin's latest! This is truly a high end leather strap. Strap is made from the highest quality soft naked finish garment weight cowhide leather on the topside and underside, with a 1/4" foam and suede split core. The strap is complimented with the CF Martin embroidered logo and double stitched heavy thread detailing.
Buttery soft, it hugs you like a fine Italian leather glove!
Highly recommended for use with lighter, acoustic guitars. Available in Brown 18A0000 or Black 18A0001. $90.00

Planet Waves Deluxe Padded Leather Strap

The Deluxe Series sets the standard for leather straps. This particular strap is made of a very stiff leather and would be perfect for use with heavier or solid body guitars such as a Gibson Les Paul or Fender Stratocaster. However, good leather straps like these tend to break in, becoming softer over time. This two-ply garment leather strap has a padded inner core right where you need it.
The Deluxe Series exudes class and style, fashion and function. All feature an exclusive tapered contour designed to prevent twisting when used with acoustic guitars. The body of the straps is 4" longer than standard straps, giving you more support where you need it most. All are adjustable from 44.5" to 53" long. Price $89.00

I recommend using Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather Cleaner & Conditioner on all leather guitar straps. Meguiar's cleans, moisturizes and preserves leather with aloe and other anti-aging nutrients. It protects them from UV rays while imparting a beautiful luster to the leather. I've used it to restore faded, dried out leather too.

Planet Waves DARE Strap - Electric Guitar

Planet Waves has teamed up with product designer Troy Dare to bring you the patented Dare Strap. Unlike conventional straps, the Dare Strap allows your to equally distribute the weight of your instrument over both shoulders.Great for heavy instruments and players with back / neck conditions. This is the strap that I use on my Fender Stratocaster which is the heaviest solid body guitar that I own next to my Aria Pro II Fullerton model.

I've coupled this strap with a set of Ernie Ball Super Strap Locks for a amazingly secure connection. These strap locks also make it easy to take the strap off without overstretching the leather end holes. Ernie Ball Super Strap Locks can be used with all of the straps shown in this review except for perhaps the Martin High End Leather Strap due to its thickness.
